New Year's Resolutions

I'm generally not big on New Year's Resolutions, but this year, I do have a few, since it is my last year in my 30's. They are all pretty much related.

1. I am going to exercise at least three times per week. We gave ourselves the Wii Fit Balance Board for Christmas, and we are all having fun with that. I see that as really helping through these next few Winter months. It keeps track of goals, work out sessions, etc. And as a mother, I really admire its skill with guilt trips.

That being said, Wuhu Island is fabulous, and I want to move there.

2. I want to move my bedtime up, at least to 11:30. I know 10 p.m. would be better, but right now that is a HUGE change. I am convinced that my body still operates on Pacific Time. Here, even seven years later, I still go to bed 3 hours later than in California, and wake up about 3 hours later. I've read that some people just don't have the ability to adjust to time zones, especially over several, and continue with health problems until they return to their home time zone. I hope that is not me.

3. 30 pounds (45 total) by my 40th birthday. That's not my final destination - about half way to my final goal. 30 pounds puts me at a place where I was at least a lot more functional and content with my body than I am now. I wasn't snoring, my cycles were regular, and I could fit into clothes I actually liked.

In the end, my goal is to be healthier, not perfect. Not being able to eat grains or sugar has made a huge difference toward those ends. But with all that I've given up recently...I'm definitely skipping out on the "giving up something for Lent" this year. There's nothing left except sex.

So, do you have any resolutions? I'd love to hear them.

I'm not a resolution maker, personally. I think the big resolution list making is more of an opportunity to make bigger than normal goals... and fall further when they don't work out. Again, though, that's how it has worked for me, personally. Plus I'm sitting at a place right now where I have NO idea how much life is going to change again in a few months (we're expecting a baby in March - my other two are potty trained, sleep well, etc) - it feels like too much uncertainty to try and plan right now.

But your comment about the only thing left to give up is sex reminded me of two of my friends from college (who were newly married at the time - 10 years now). The wife said she was going to give up sex for Lent. The husband said that was her choice... but he wasn't. Knowing them as a couple and that he's not the stray outside of marriage type made it all the funnier =)

you made me laugh with the lent/sex comment :)

I would LOVE to give up sugar - but then again I don't know if I would. I think I would really like to just SERIOUSLY limit it but I don't know how I would do that with out giving it up entirely. I think I am seriously addicted -

Mama,

Yeah, these are pretty much my goals no matter what, so there really is nothing special about them.

My husband said "absolutely not" on the giving up sex for Lent. Since it would be a goal that would include him...

Amie,

It can be seriously addicting. I've read that both wheat and sugar work on some of the same receptors as cocaine.

Some of the "primal" sites that I follow end up having great recipes with unprocessed sweeteners. I make an awesome pumpkin pie with maple syrup and almond meal, and some great muffins that use either honey or maple syrup (and coconut flour). They are a bit gentler on the body. These are my occasional treats and something that lets the kids continue to let me live. :)

I used to only give up wheat for Lent, or at least the idea was to use Lent to springboard me into permanently giving up wheat.

Here's my favorite story on that...

This comment is not meant to offend you, but I had no idea that you weren't 40 yet. I've never met you, only read your blog and e-mails. I'm not even sure I've seen a picture of you. I'm 37 and I have children much younger than you. Plus reading your blog it seems like you are more wise on a lot of topics as compared to me so I added in my perspective also older. It's strange to me how old women are when they have their children how it affects my perception of them. Anyway, enjoy your last year in your 30s and I hope you are able to succeed in your New Year's Resolutions this year.

No offense taken, Ewe.

Some of my best, "youngest," and wisest friends are in their forties and fifties. I wanna be just like them. :)

That was really sweet of you to say. God bless you with your young ones. It's a great time, but I'm kind of thankful mine can help with the dishes and babysit.

I want to move to Wuhu island also. Then I could skateboard like I've always wanted to (ie, not falling off when attempting tricks.) Also, no traffic for my bike to contend with. Oh, and I'd like to fly like a chicken too.
I'm not sure where the snow comes from though for the skiing/snowboarding/snowball fights though.
