First Communion

Our son Chris celebrated his first communion today. I can't even begin to express how joyful it was to kneel next to him and receive Christ's Body and Blood with him. I cried.

One thing that I found particularly touching was that the LSB rite for First Communion Prior to Confirmation closes with the verse "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Phil 1:6.

Philippians 1:3-6, 9-11 was our wedding text. This text has meant more to me than I could ever say, but that God who began a good work in us is continuing to do so through us to bless our children as they are strengthened by His Word and Sacrament is a depth of meaning that really hit home today.

"Congratulations" does not seem the right sort of response to the reception of Jesus' body and blood, but Christ be praised for this wondrous and awe-full (as the old hymn used to say) occasion. I share your joy, both as parent who knows the delight of seeing his children receive First Communion, and as a pastor who is most heartened when this gift of gifts is not withheld from the younger disciples of our dear Lord Jesus.

God continue to bless you and your family.
